Thinking about doing your engagement photos at the beach? Honestly, there’s something truly magical about the sand, sea, and sky as a backdrop for your photos. I’ve always loved the beach, growing up near it, I’ve always found it calming, and now living in Wiltshire, I jump at any excuse to get back there. That sense of peace and freedom really comes through in photos, and I love helping couples capture it too.
Beaches give soft, natural light, space to move around, and a relaxed vibe, perfect for capturing those real, emotional moments between you and your partner.
Why a Beach Engagement Shoot Works
• Beautiful natural scenery: the ocean, sand, and sky are timeless backdrops that I’ve always found so calming and inspiring.
• Relaxed and playful vibes: beaches are perfect if you want your photos to feel natural, not staged.
• Loads of variety: you can do candid shots, romantic snuggles, or dramatic sunset photos.
Planning Your Beach Shoot
Timing:
• The golden hour (about an hour before sunset) gives that dreamy soft light we photographers love. I personally love shooting at the beach around this time, the colours are incredible, and it’s so peaceful.
• Early mornings are perfect if you want the beach quiet and private, with fewer people around.
Clothing:
• Light, flowing outfits look amazing in beach photos.
• Avoid bright neon colours that might clash with the natural tones of sand and sea.
Props and Accessories (Optional):
• Blankets, picnic setups, flowers, or simple signs can add a personal touch.
• Barefoot photos often feel natural and relaxed
Tips for Feeling Comfortable in Front of the Camera
• Walk, chat, laugh (don’t stress about “posing”) Beaches are such a relaxed environment, make the most of it
• Gentle prompts are much easier than stiff poses.
• Bring something meaningful, a blanket, a favourite item, or even your dog, to make the session personal and fun.
Real Couple Shoot: Winter Beach Adventure
Even in winter or bad weather, the beach is still an amazing option for your engagement shoot. I recently photographed a couple, M&L, the day after a literal storm, the wind was wild, hair everywhere and coats flapping about!
But honestly? It so much fun! The stormy sky, dramatic waves, and windy conditions made for some truly unique photos. By focusing on the connection between them, we captured so many beautiful, emotional moments, laughing, holding hands, cuddling, and just enjoying being together. By the end, it felt like I was just watching two people enjoy each others company and I had the privilege of capturing it all.
So even if it’s winter or right after a storm, you can still get photos you’ll cherish forever. The beach really is one of the most magical spots for an engagement shoot.
Takeaways from this shoot:
• Embrace the weather: it can make your photos unique.
• Forget perfection: candid moments are what make photos special.
• Layer up or bring a blanket to stay cozy and keep the mood relaxed.
Why an Engagement Shoot Matters
Engagement shoots aren’t just pretty photos. They’re a chance to:
• Get comfortable in front of the camera, so your wedding day photos feel effortless.
• Build a relationship with your photographer, so you feel relaxed and natural.
• Capture special moments before your big day that you’ll treasure forever.
And if it’s at the beach? All the better, I personally love helping couples make the most of that calming, magical space. There’s just something about the sea and sand that brings out joy and connection in every shot.
